What is TMS?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment that has shown high effectiveness in managing a range of mental health conditions—particularly those that have not responded to traditional approaches. TMS is especially effective for treatment-resistant depression, and is also used to treat anxiety, bipolar depression, Postnatal Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and depression associated with chronic pain, among other conditions.
TMS is a safe and well-tolerated procedure, requiring no anaesthesia or hospital stay. It can be used alongside psychiatric medications, making it a flexible option within broader treatment plans.
How Does rTMS Work?
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with mood regulation and emotional processing. The treatment involves delivering electromagnetic pulses through transcranial channels to targeted brain regions.
These magnetic pulses stimulate nerve cells by inducing small electrical currents, supporting the brain’s natural electrical communication. Over time, rTMS helps rebuild and strengthen neural connections, enhancing neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to adapt and reorganise itself. Most patients experience a notable improvement in symptoms, even when previous treatments have failed.
Is TMS Safe?
TMS has an excellent safety record and is considered one of the safest treatments available in psychiatry today. It has been approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of depression and other mental health conditions.
All patients undergo a detailed medical review to ensure TMS is safe and appropriate for their specific circumstances.
Does It Have Any Side Effects?
Most patients tolerate TMS very well. Side effects are usually minimal and temporary, with the most common being mild headache or scalp discomfort during or after sessions. These are generally managed easily with over-the-counter pain relief.
While extremely rare, there is a very small risk of seizure, which is why a thorough pre-treatment assessment will be carried out by your consultant to rule out any potential risks before starting therapy.
How Long Is the Treatment?
A typical course of rTMS involves 20 to 30 sessions, with each session lasting from 3 to 20 minutes, depending on the specific protocol used. Standard treatment is delivered once daily over a period of 4 to 6 weeks.
However, Alexmed also offers an accelerated treatment option, where multiple sessions are safely delivered per day. This allows the full course of treatment to be completed in as little as 1 to 2 weeks, with outcomes that are equally effective.
